Kasaragod: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested two activists of Sangha Parivar in connection with the murder of Abubaker Siddique. The accused have been identified as Ashwith alias Achchu (28) and Karthik (27) from Pratap Nagar, Sonkala and two of their accomplices are absconding.
The police said that a drunker brawl eventually culminated in the murder. Karthik is the main accused in the case. They are also looking at this crime from the angle of political rivalry as both the arrested are Hindu activists. Two motorbikes abandoned at the crime scene were confiscated by the police.
The team headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police V Sukumaran, has 20 members including two circle inspectors. The team led the arrested duo to the crime scene to gather more information and produced them before the court on Tuesday, August 7.
The body was subjected to post-mortem at Pariyaram Medical College Hospital and later kept at five different places to enable people to pay their last respects. The mortal remains reached the residence on August 6 evening, after which the funeral was conducted in Sonkal.
After the murder, the entire city wore a deserted look since an undeclared bandh was observed in the town. Activists of different political parties forced the closure of shops in Uppala and Kumble. Bus transport came to a standstill as stones were pelted at two buses near Bandyodu, including a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus.
The police have kept an eye on sensitive areas and security is very tight in both Kerala and Karnataka borders. Political rivalry also might have led to this murder because this isn’t the first incident witnessed in this locality. There have been many murders here due to communal or political rivalry.
