Mangaluru: In a 2015 rape case involving a minor girl, the Second Additional District and Sessions Court and POCSO Special Court has sentenced two men to 20 years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 20000 fine on them here on Wednesday, May 8.
The convicts are Sachin Kumar (22), a labourer and resident of Koyyuru village of Belthangady town and K T Mathew alias Manu (24), an autorickshaw driver from Laiyla-Patladi.
On March 2, 2015, Sachin and Mathew had offered a first PUC girl, a drop back home by trying to convince her that they too were going by the same route. When the girl had refused to go with them, they had dragged her into a Maruti Omni van, taken her to a nearby hilly area and raped her.
Her parents who expected her back home by 3.30 PM were worried when she did not arrive even after 5 PM. who normally gets back home by 3.30 PM. Later, after returning home, she revealed everything to her parents.
Her mother rushed to the Belthangady Police Station and filed a case against the duo, immediately.
The then Circle Inspector B R Lingappa had carried out the investigation and produced the accused before the court.
Around 23 evidences and 19 witnesses were produced before the court.
After hearing both the parties, Judge B R Pallavi pronounced the duo guilty and sentenced them.
The accused were sentenced under IPC Section 376 (D) and POCSO Act’s Section 6.
The court has ordered the duo to pay Rs 18000 towards the victim’s family.
It also warned the accused of six months of extended imprisonment if they failed to pay the amount to the victims’ family.
Meanwhile, the court has also directed the victim’s family to avail additional compensation from the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority.
