Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has accused the Narendra Modi-led Union Government has completely failed to handle the Covid-19.

Addressing a protest meet organised in front of the DC’s office on Tuesday, June 16, CPI(M) district secretary board member Sunil Kumar Bajal said, “Due to the lockdown, people with a poor financial background have been struggling. Instead of safeguarding the poor, the Union Government has been favouring corporates.”

“The Union Home Minister had gone ‘missing’ for many days while the whole country was struggling. However, he reappeared after the announcement of the Assembly elections in some states. Even though the deadly disease Covid-19 has been spreading at a rapid rate, the Union Government has not responded properly,” he added.

Later, a list of demands including provision of Rs 7,500 as monthly compensation for poor families for the next six months, 10 kgs of foodgrains, extension of the employment guarantee scheme, job security for workers etc. was handed over to district Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh.

CPI(M) leaders J Balakrishna Shetty, Dayananda Shetty, Santhosh Bajal, Jayanthi Shetty, Vasudeva Uchil, Suresh Bajal, Naveen Konchadi, Balu Devadiga, Ashok Shriyan, Bharathi Bolar, Gerald Towers and others were present.
