Mangaluru: Proclaiming himself as the senior leader in the Congress in the district, K S Masood, President of Muslim Central Committee inaugurating the “Mangaluru Chalo” at Nehru Maidan here on May 2, said, “This protest is organised demanding justice for the community. We are not here to support anyone but we want justice for the innocents who are being harassed and tortured. This is not a political forum but a peaceful protest which may turn serious if justice is denied. In case of Qureshi, government has just asked CID to collect the report. We want judicial probe into this matter.”

Police who are alleging that stones were pelted during the protest must show the video to prove it, he said.

He also questioned what the political representatives had done when Korapadi gram panchayat vice president was brutally murdered.

Community is first and Congress is next

Former Mayor K Ashraf, President of Muslim Organisations Union DK, in his address who termed his community as first and Congress next, said, in several instances youths from the community were harassed and physically tortured by the police.”Today Qureshi had to face the police harassment, tomorrow even we may. In Dakshina Kannada, Muslims are not united and hence they facing police harassment. Police officers are breaking the unity in the community. Police harassment should end from now. And we will fight against the police atrocities in favour of any religion.”

On murder of Jaleel, he said that despite knowledge that Jaleel was facing threat, the representatives did not take the issue seriously.

Taking a dig at Congress ministers he said, “They have failed to hold at least a talk with us out of concern.” He demanded the suspension of the CCB officers and at least send them on leave for “torturing” Quereshi.”

Advocate Dinesh Ulepady also spoke on the occasion. He also gave the example that how the Konaje police had arrested a youth from Manjeshwara and tortured him.

Criticising against he police commissioner he said that though a complaint was given against the police officer for violence on innocents, he had not taken any action. He also said that police had failed to uphold the constitutional and human rights during the arrest of accused and in most of the cases there were human right violations. Accused is also arrested from the premises of the court which is contempt of the court, he added. Police are good at cooking up stories and planting the false evidences, he alleged.

He also urged that the Police Act should be amended so that if there is any violation of human rights, immediately the officer concerned is suspended.

P B D’Sa, Yakub Saahadi and others were present.
