Mangaluru: “The main aim of using social media is to spread awareness among the people about the functioning of the district police, to promote communal harmony and take police closer to the people with the motto of ‘with you and for you” said SP Sharanappa.
He was addressing the press persons after launching the upgraded version of Dakshina Kannada District Police blog, Facebook and Twitter pages at SP’s Office on October 17.

“The revised blog contains information about the history of DK police, Police Officers, Police stations, crimes, road safety, cyber crime, childline, guidelines for motorcyclists, women’s rights, RTI and so on. The blog will be updated twice a day – before 10 am and between 6 and 7 pm” said SP Dr Sharanappa.

“In order to bring the public closer towards police department and to report any crime, we have launched Facebook and Twitter pages. Earlier, the blog was mostly used by mediapersons, but our intention is that the general public should also make use these pages and the misuse of it will not be entertained and strict actions could be taken against those doing so. The public can share any information that they want with the police through the Facebook page and help in improving the efficiency of the police. If we get any genuine information, we will investigate it” he added.

“Through our social media pages, people can openly discuss and send information and share videos that are of public interest. The Twitter page will be used only to tweet important things. The PSI rank officers will have access to the Twitter page and the SP and team will monitor it. Social Media Survillance Cell is under planning process and will be launched soon at the district level, once permission is obtained from higher officers” he said answering to query.

SP also said that the places are identified to install the CCTV cameras and he has requested the DC to install 60 CCTV cameras at various locations. “If we install CCTV cameras, we can reduce crime. Inspite of facing shortage of manpower, we need to provide safety to the people. Sometimes due to shortage of manpower, we are unable to reach all the places. If we install CCTV cameras, it will help to reduce crime and also to solve cases quickly. We have identified 70 junctions where CCTV cameras can be installed.”

Addittional Superintendent of Police Vincent Shanthakumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police Bantwala Sub-division Rahul Kumar Shahapurwad and Assistant Superintendent of Police Puttur Sub-division C B Ryshyanth were also present.
