Mangaluru: Rev. Fr. Peter Paul Saldanha has been appointed as the Bishop of Mangalore Diocese by Pope Francis. He is the 14th Bishop of the Diocese.
The official announcement of his appointment was simultaneously made in Rome, Delhi and Mangalore today (July 3) at 3.30 pm. In Mangalore, Most Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza made the official announcement at Bishop’s House.
Present Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza who has served the diocese for 22 years, will continue to be the Apostolic Administrator till the new Bishop takes the charge as the Bishop of Mangalore, said a press release of the Diocese.
Fr Peter Paul Saldanha was born on 27 April 1964 in Kirem parish. A Diocesan priest of Mangalore Diocese, Fr. Saldanha was ordained at Bejai Church by the then Bishop Rt. Rev. Basil D’Souza, on May 6, 1991. He earned his Bachelor of Theology standing first in his batch. After his ordination briefly served as an Assistant Parish Priest at Moodubelle (now Udupi diocese) and Milagres Parishes in Mangalore Diocese.
In 1996 Fr. Saldanha was appointed professor at St Josephs Seminary Jeppu, Mangalore. Later he went to Rome for higher studies in Theology and obtained Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from Pontifical Urbanian University. Since 2010 he is Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the university in Rome.
