Mangaluru: The petition to form ward committees and area sabhas in Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) came up for scrutiny in the High Court, where the urban development department was asked to file objections before admitting the Public Interest Litigation (PIL). The urban development department was given two weeks’ time to file objections, if any.

Four petitioners namely Nigel Albuquerque and Ajoy D’Silva from Mangaluru and Narendra Kumar and Kathyayhin Chamaraj from Bengaluru had filed the PIL in High Court and requested for formation of ward committees and area Sabhas in MCC. The petitioners also asked the urban development department secretary to frame guidelines for nomination of members.

One of the petitioners, Narendra Kumar of Bengaluru told Newskarnataka that formation of ward committees facilitates involvement of the common people in any developmental work of a particular ward. The corporators also will be held responsible if any work could not be completed in a stipulated period”, he said and added that common man is given an opportunity for self governance if the ward committees and area sabhas are formed in MCC.
