Mangaluru: Debraj Sengupta (26), resident of Bhardhaman district from West Bengal has been convicted under the Section 66 and 67 of Information Technology Act (Hacking without Permission) and will serve a sentence of simple imprisonment of one year and pay penalty of Rs 50,000 and under Section 67 of the same Act pertaining to transmitting obscene photos he has been given simple imprisonment of one year and penalty of Rs one lac. The court has ordered that Rs one lac should go to the victim as compensation.
The conviction and sentence was delivered by Magistrate Undi Manjula, Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) third court, on Wednesday.
It is said that Sengupta had used a picture of a woman, morphed her picture with other obscene photos and circulated it online through mails. The woman is identified as an air hostess working for Air India Express and a native of West Bengal, who has been living at Konchady in Mangaluru.
During the victim’s visit to Bhardhaman in 2010, she had met her close acquaintance Sengupta. After this meeting Sengupta had hacked the woman’s email account, stole her photos, morphed them with obscene photos and circulated it online.
The victim lodged a complaint in 2010 with Kavoor police and soon the accused was traced using the IP address. The victim had turned hostile during the investigation, but the significant judgement was delivered on the basis of of electronic evidence.
