In the coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, a significant transformation is underway in the traditional wedding season. Historically centered around April-May and Nov-Jan, weddings and auspicious ceremonies are now increasingly being rescheduled towards the end of the year. This shift is driven by multiple factors including rising temperatures, acute water shortages, and the prevalence of examinations during the summer months.

The Change in Wedding Season:

Due to the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions and the inconvenience caused by summer exams, families are opting to schedule weddings later in the year. This realignment not only addresses environmental concerns but also caters to the convenience of those who travel back home during the year-end holidays.

Adapting to New Norms:

Local wedding planners and vendors are swiftly adjusting their schedules and services to accommodate this changing trend. Ashwatham Hegde AA, proprietor of Tulunadu Food Catering Services, highlighted the shift in demand, noting that functions are now primarily concentrated towards the end of the year.

Reasons for the Change:

Apart from harsh summers and water scarcity, the decision to postpone events is influenced by the need to accommodate students and their parents who are occupied with exams during April-May. Additionally, the back-to-back Moudya season further discourages holding events during peak summer months.

NRIs and Year-End Vacations:

Philip D’Souza, a caterer specializing in Christian weddings, mentioned that a significant portion of weddings now occurs during the year-end period. This coincides with the vacations of NRIs, making it more convenient to host functions during Christmas holidays.

The Impact on Event Planning:

While smaller events still occur during the summer, the bulk of wedding-related activities are now concentrated between November and January. This adjustment allows for better planning and ensures the participation of friends and relatives, making the most of the favorable weather conditions during the year-end period.
