Bantwal: Bantwal is one of the progressive taluks in state which has seen lot of improvement in basic infrastructure but maintenance is below par at many places because of which it is unable forge ahead of the rest. When it comes to housing, government spends lot of money accommodate its officials and employees near their place of work.
One housing project undertaken with World Bank aid at Mandady in B Kasba village limits has turned into a habitat for rats, stray dogs with maintenance in doldrums. Once occupied by agricultural assistants and later by treasury officials now lies vacant due to negligence. The entire building in a plot of 14 cents land, surrounded by weeds appears like haunted place with no signs of revival in the near future.
Chadravathi, an anganawadi worker feels if the buildings are renovated and given to child welfare department it will help little children in the area who lack basic amenities in the existing centre.
Deputy Director of Agriculture in the area, P F Miranda said, the department is understaffed and the post of agricultural assistants no longer exists. Further he said, he has instructed his department officials to forward the proposal to hand over the property to the Anganawadi centre and confirmed that the final decision will be taken in consultation with higher officials.
Devadas Shetty, Town municipal council member saddened by the condition of the neglected buildings said, TMC is unable to do anything as the property is not in its control and concluded that If the building is given to TMC, it can be used to meet societal needs.
