Mangaluru: The police department should initiate stringent against against the racketeers of hi-tech prostitution run in city flats, directed Karnataka State Commission for Women Chairperson Nagalakshmi Bai.

Nagalakshmi gave this direction after Hilda Rayaapan of Prajna Counselling Centre expressed how disgusting it was that the women were been exploited by prostitution racket in city flats through brokers.

Speaking in the review meeting at DC office here on September 25, Nagalakshmi Bai also said that the police department should work in tandem with the NGOs who work for the betterment of women to end the menace.

The DCP while assuring of taking action said the city police were acting whenever they received information. Recently illegally run massage parlours, spa centres were raided for running illegal activities, victims rescued and cases filed against the building owner and those running such illegal business, he informed.

Stating the Puttur Taluk Hospital as “hell on earth”, Nagalakshmi Bai slammed DHO Ramakrishna Rao for the pathetic condition of the hospital in Puttur with stinking toilets and no physician.

“Only poor people come to taluk hospital. If there are no facilities and doctor to provide treatment to needy people, Why can’t you shut the hospital down? If there are no doctors it is even more painful”, she said.

Replying to this, the DHO said that the government had sanctioned Rs 35 Lakh for the developmental works of the hospital and the work would start in ten days. However, there is a shortage of physicians in the district, he added.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. K G Jagadish who intervened, ordered the DHO to ensure that that doctors from Sullia, Belthangady and Bantwal taluks visit Puttur Taluk hospital one day in a week and provide the treatment.

When an officer from Labour Department said that no complaints had been received of harassment of women in work place so far, Nagalakshmi Bai said that the department had utterly failed despite crime against women in several factories in the district. Labour Department should give importance to the development of women, she added.

ADC Kumar, CEO of Zilla Panchayat D R Ravi and others were present.
