Mangaluru: An 18-year-old boy who had been to Panambur Beach along with his friends is feared drowned in the sea on Saturday, October 13.
The boy who went missing has been identified as Sudharaj, son of Keshav, a resident of Gerukatte in Belthangady Taluk. Sources from Panambur Police Station informed that a group of 11 friends, who are studying at Government College, Belthangady had been to Panambur Beach on Saturday morning. After playing Kabaddi on the shore, all of them stepped into the water. When they attempted to go deeper into the sea, the lifeguards at Panambur asked them to get back to shore. Though all of them followed the directions of lifeguards, Sundaraj went again and jumped into the water before anybody could react. A search operation has been launched, but there was no trace of him, when reports last came in.
Elderly man rescued
In another incident, an elderly man was rescued by the lifeguards when he was attempting to commit suicide by jumping into the sea. The rescued elderly person has been identified as Mahadevappa, son of Malledevaru from Gundlupet, Chamarajanagar. According to the sources, Mahadevappa had been to the southern side of the Panambur Beach and jumped into the sea. On noticing this, lifeguards rushed to rescue him and succeeded in their effort. The reason behind his suicide attempt is said to be depression. After the rescue operation, he was handed over to Panambur Police Station and his family members have been informed about the incident, told Panambur Beach Development CEO Yathish Baikampady.
