Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr Selvamani R informed that free check-up and treatment camp would be conducted in those areas where more than five malaria or dengue cases are detected.

When some of the ZP members informed about the increasing number of malaria and dengue cases in the district, during the general meeting on Tuesday, July 2, Selvamani asked ZP members to inform to the officials of Zilla Panchayat if more than five cases of malaria and dengue cases are reported in any area. “The Zilla Panchayat would take initiatives to conduct free check-up and treatment camp in such areas to check the disease,” he added.

Meanwhile, Zilla Panchayat member M S Mohammed informed about the shortage of doctors, pharmacists, lab technicians and Group D workers in government hospitals. “Mere construction of hospital buildings will be of no use if there are no proper staff and equipment. Zilla Panchayat should pressurise the government to provide proper number of staff and other infrastructure to the government hospitals”, he said.

CEO Selvamani R informed that he had already written to the government about the shortage of staff and other infrastructure in primary health care centres, especially in the rural areas. “The proposal sent by the Zilla Panchayat has been approved by the finance department and we are hoping to receive the sanctions soon”, Selvamani said.

Meanwhile, some members said that the performance of the SSLC and the PUC students has not been up to the mark and this may be because of the wrong evaluation. “Students who went in for revaluation have got better marks,” the members said.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) Y Shivaramaiah rubbished the allegation that the students’ performance in  SSLC or PUC examinations was very poor. “The number of schools which secured 100 percent result in SSLC is 116 this year as against 66 schools in the previous year in SSLC examination. Though the district did not feature in the top, the students, officials and the teachers have done their best,” he said.
