Udupi: A Ranina crab, popularly known as ‘frog crab’, a rare species of crab that are generally found on African and Hawaiian islands, was found along the Udupi coast recently.
According to marine experts, such crabs are found 100 meters beneath the tropical and subtropical oceans, and are shaped like a frog. It has a hard shell with 10 legs. Crabs are usually seen moving sideward due to their body structure. But the ‘frog crab’ stands out as it has a slimmer body and moves forward and backwards.
According to Javier Luque from the University of Alberta, Canada, these species are more evolved and are well camouflaged.
Luque says that the Ranina crabs scavenge on the remains of dead marine animals and also on small fishes by swimming close to the bottom.
