155 Gram Panchayats of Udupi gear up for election on May 29

Udupi: Elections in 155 gram panchayats of Udupi will be held on May 29. As per the guidance of State Election Commission (SEC), election notification was issued in the district on May 11. May 18 was the last date for nominations, the scrutiny of nominations was held on May 19. May 21 was the last date to withdraw the nominations. Counting of votes is scheduled to be on June 5.

Udupi is all set to face the election and will conduct poll on the first phase, which is on May 29. Candidates and their party members are working hard to win and expect to take the control of local body (village council).

All the Anganwadi and government teachers along with other officials are given the election responsibilities here. Poll will be held between 7 am and 5 pm.

For155 Gram Panchayats in the district, after scrutiny of nomination papers 6,538 candidates were in the fray in the district. There are 2,738 candidates in Udupi taluk, 2,470 in Kundapur taluk and 1,130 in Karkala taluk.

Except emergency services, May 29 will be a declared holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act in jurisdictional gram panchayat limits. Employees of public, private and commercial sectors will avail paid leave on the same day.

According to the district administration liquor will not be sold from midnight of May 27 till midnight of May 29.

On May 29th, election will be held at 15 districts which includes Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagalur, Mysuru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Belagavi, Vijayapura, Haveri, Bagalkote, Uttar Kannada, Dharwad, and Gadag, the remaining taluks will schedule election on June 2.

The highlight of this year’s election is that 50 % of the seats are reserved for women. As per the district administration there are total of 7, 38, 608 voters in the district, of which 3, 53,190 are male voters and 3, 85,418 are female voters.

Taking charge of the security, Annamalai, SP assured peaceful election and as maximum men will be deployed for the same. There 907 polling booths, 131 have been identified as sensitive, 59 as hypersensitive and 54 as Maoist affected areas.

K M Asha, Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Mysuru Division will be appointed as the Observer for Udupi.
