Udupi: The city and service buses in Udupi have implemented the cash card system for passengers and done their bit in supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a cashless India.
The newly implemented cash card system will give various facilities to its users. The card can be availed at any of the Canara Combined Transport Services. At first, the card needs to be charged with a particular amount and will have its validity for a year. If the card is recharged for Rs 1,000, the traveler can avail service of Rs 1,100 in buses as the top-up gives a 10% bonus. If lost, the card can be blocked like an ATM.
Udupi was technology-driven in 2008 itself, when radio frequency identification technology (RFID) was implemented. The RFID was limited to regular commuters who travel once in a day. Commuters would have to submit the card which would be already recharged. The conductor would place the card in front of the machine, the amount would be deducted and a ticket issued. Recently, auto-rickshaws in Mangaluru city went the cashless way with payTM installed in autos.
