Udupi: In the general body meeting of City Municipal Corporation (CMC), the members unanimously demanded a solution to curb the increasing number of the stray dogs in the city here on Friday July 31.

Councilors opinioned that public holds CMC and the councilors responsible for not solving the issue. “Municipality has received many complaints in this regards here. Stray dog problems are very high in and around colleges, markets, and hotels in the city”, they said.

Malpe fisheries harbour is become the hub of stray dogs. People in large numbers leave their dogs there. There is also a tendency in the city, that some dog owners leave their dogs on the roads and tie them saying that dog belongs to them. This creates confusion as to segregate stray dogs and the pet dogs, they added.

Hence as a solution to it, the CMC announced that all dog owners should compulsorily register their dogs along with photographs at CMC. “A fee of Rs. 300 will be levied from dog owners”,said P. Yuvaraj, CMC President.

Yashpal Suvarna, councilor, suggested that a committee including 2 members of the CMC staff need to be formed to follow up on the registration of dogs.

CMC officials said that there were about 6,000 dogs in the city. First phase of sterilizing dogs to check their population has been done already. As per the norms, these dogs had to be left back to the places from where they were picked up after the sterilisation operation. This may gradually decrease the population of stray dogs he added.

Festival decoration remnants cause mess in city

Disposal of garbage (flowers, sugar cane and fruit etc) on the occasion of festivals creates mess in the city – this issue created a huge chaos during the CMC meeting.

Hence CMC president said, “To keep the city clean from the dirt and garbage which is left after a festival, a small fine will be imposed on small vendors for not disposing it off appropriately”.

He also added that this will make the vendors more responsible in cleaning the area before closing up their respective shops.
