Udupi: The nation-wide bundh call given by the Congress took an ugly turn in the Udupi district when members of the Congress and the BJP fought it out in the open, on Monday, September 10. In the episode, BJP City President Prabhakar Poojary was severely injured.
It is said that the Congress members were forcing certain shop owners in the Kadiyali area to pull down the shutters to show support for the bundh. Soon, the BJP members intervened and objected. The altercation snowballed into a fight outside the SP’s office premises, where the two factions started attacking each other. Poojary was injured in the melee. He suffered severe injuries to his face and head.
The police, who rushed to the spot, resorted to mild lathi charge to bring the situation under control. Several others were also injured and they have all been taken to a nearby hospital.
The peaceful protest has now turned serious and the situation is tense in the Udupi district.
