Udupi: ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse’ day was observed at Manipal tiger circle to create awareness against drug addition on Friday, June 26. Udupi SP, Annamalai inaugurated the programe.
In his inaugural speech SP said that, Every year June 26 is recognized as the World Drug Day. The day should be a reminder to achieve the goal of forming a society free of drug abuse.
“It is one of the most important days, to spend some valuable time to create awareness against drugs. Government is supposed to organise such programmes, however I wish the private organisations too to do the same”, he added.
He said that it is easy to create awareness in the city, however in rural areas it is difficult and so priority should be given to reach the village population. Drug Abuse is not limited to only drugs, bidi, cigarettes and tobacco but also proscribed medicines.
He called upon every individual, politician, auto driver, and the media to join hands against drugs. Under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Bill, 2014 (“NDPS”) police are also working for this campaign.
He added that states like Punjab and Delhi are under the severe threat of drug addition which comes under red zone, however Karnataka, AP and TN is in medium zone. So we can still hope for a better society.
Schools and colleges should be made use of to create awareness on drugs. He added that the immense contribution of De-addiction centers is commendable, he said.
On the occasion, pamphlets and stickers on drug awareness were released and people were asked to stick it on the vehicles.
