Udupi: The jackfruit is one of the primary fruits of Tulunadu. It has good nourishment in the form and nutrition and in the future, it is going to be great importance, said Dinakar Babu, President of Zilla Panchayat, Udupi.
After inaugurating a three-day Jackfruits and Vegetables Mela at Farmers’ Seva Kendra Shivalli, Doddanagudde here on Saturday, July 13, which organised jointly by the Horticulture Department, district administration and Zilla Panchayat, Dinakar Babu said that in the older days, jackfruit was one of the staple foods for the Tulunadu people. “But, in the present era, people, especially children are not interested in consuming jackfruit. It has good nutrition content and it can be relished in different ways”, he added.
There is need to create awareness on the uses of jackfruit among the children, he opined. He lauded the horticulture department for organising the jackfruit fair and sales. People should take advantage of such melas, he said.
Uday Kotian, president of the Zilla Panchayat standing committee on agriculture and industry, joint director of Mysuru division horticulture department and others also spoke on the occasion. Sheela K Shetty, Vice President, ZP presided over the programme. Malini Shetty, Karkala Taluk Panchayat President, Geethanjali Suvarna, ZP member and officials of various departments were present.
Horticulture Department Deputy Director Bhuvaneshwari welcomed the gathering. Srinivas B, Senior Deputy Director proposed a vote of thanks and Sanjeev Nayak compered the programme.
Earlier, the programme was inaugurated with the cutting of a jackfruit. Various types of jackfruits and food items prepared from it, as well as jackfruit seeds were kept for exhibition and sale. A large number of people visited the fair and bought various dishes made from the jackfruit from various places of the district.
