Udupi : In a historic judgement the accused in Kemmannur murder case have been given life sentence by the court. The murder case was registered on June 25, 2012.

Shakuntala Poojary (40) was murdered by her nephew Harish Poojary (30), a resident of Uppoor village and along with his friend Santosh Poojary (29), a resident of Heroor village. While Harish ran a travel agency, Santhosh was a construction worker. Both had visited the house of Shakuntala and strangulated her to death with her own veil on June 25. The duo then took ‘mangalsutra’, a gold chain, two rings, a pair of earrings, from the body before fleeing.

It is said that Shakuntala had prepared two glasses of juice for Harish and his friend on the fateful day. These two glasses had led the police to believe that someone known to her must have committed the crime.

Her husband, Ashok worked in Muscat and she happened to be alone at the time of crime. The couple are having two children Akshay (16) and Akshita (12).

The murder was discovered when Akshita came back from school in the afternoon. She called for her mother and on not getting any response, went into her mother’s bedroom. To her utter shock, she found her lying on the floor with a shawl tightened around her neck.

A neighbour told police that two men who came on a scooter were seen entering the house at around 2 pm. They left the house after a few minutes, it is said, raising no cause for suspicion at the time.
