Legal action needed to control environmental pollution: Venkatesh Naik

Udupi: In order to control environmental pollution, certain legal actions are needed, said Udupi District Chief Sessions Court Judge T Venkatesh Naik.

He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the District Environment Friendly School Award distribution ceremony, organised by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board in collaboration with the District Administration, District Legal Services Authority, Department of Public Instruction and Karnataka State Science Parishat, Udupi at Manipal Rajathadri, DC Office here on January 27.

The honourable judge said that the various pollution control boards had done their work responsibly with regard to containing air pollution, sound pollution, water pollution and soil pollution. There should also be legal action taken against the violators of the environment protection regulations, he opined.

Environment pollution is one the greatest challenges that the world is facing today and it has its own causes, effects and solutions, he said.

“Especially in the Udupi district, the schools are very environment friendly. Along with the academics, the students should learn methods to keep the environment clean by working in tandem with the environmentalists of the district. The awareness of the importance of a clean environment is needed especially in schools,” he said.

Dinesh Nayak was the resource person during the programme and spoke about the advantages of various plants which are useful for health in particular.

On the occasion, Government Higher Primary School, Kelarkalbettu, Udupi bagged the District Environment Friendly School Award with a cash prize of Rs 30,000, a trophy and certificate. Meanwhile, the award winning Headmistress Sabitha was felicitated along with the Brahmavar Zone BEO.

This apart, 10 schools were conferred with the district Green School award and 10 more with Yellow School award on the occasion.

The selection committee member Aravind Hebbar explained the method and measures taken during the selection of the awards. He lauded the schools as well as the teachers who supported the campaign on green environment and environment pollution control by planting saplings and other means.

Dinesh Shettigar, Karnataka State Science Parishat Secretary, delivered the keynote address. Udupi Department of Public Instruction Deputy Director Sheshashayana Karinja and others were present.

Environment Officer Dr. H Laxmikanth welcomed the gathering and Shivprasad proposed a vote of thanks.
