Kundapur : Four years ago, in June 2010, Byndoor Circle Police Inspector K R Kantharaj was on his night rounds with his Driver (Police Constable) Sridhar M in Byndoor Circle limits when Kantharaj received information about a person being assaulted by two miscreants near Parijata Circle in Kundapur town at around 3 a.m. Kantharaj rushed to Kundapur and began searching for the miscreants. He was then informed by Assistant Sub-Inspector Subanna of Kundapur police station that two miscreants were running towards Sangam junction.
When Kantharaj reached the spot in his jeep, the miscreants who saw the headlights of the jeep, started running towards the municipality dumping yard near Sangam bridge. Kantharaj chased the miscreants and one of them attacked him with a knife.
Police constable Sridhar rushed to help but the other miscreant snatched the knife which had fallen to the ground and stabbed Sridhar in the back. Though he was rushed to a private hospital in Kundapur, he could not be saved.
The two were arrested with the help of the locals and were put behind bars and remained there pending trial. The trial has now concluded and the The Kundapur District Additional and Sessions Court chaired by Justice Rajashekara Venkata Gowda, on Thursday, March 5, awarded life imprisonment to Raghu, a native of Kottayam The other accused Rajesh has been awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment.
In the backdrop of the murder of a police constable on duty, renowned advocate Ravikiran Murudeshwar had been appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor in the case. Locals namely Girish, Sunil, Rajendra Kanchan and Surendra Kanchan who had helped in nabbing the accused duo, served as the witnesses in the court. The court was informed about the duo’s involvement in various crime cases in Karnataka and Kerala in the past.
