Udupi : A trawler boat engaged in deep sea fishing caught fire after an explosion at around 5am on Wednesday, March 15 near Karwar here damaging the boat as well as injuring the boat driver.
Owing to the extensive smoke coming out from the engine as a result of the explosion the boat driver Anthon D’Costa (46) had become very sick and had also suffered burn injuries in the mishap.
After the incident, boat people sent out SOS messages alerting nearby boats as well as Coastal Security Force personnel with the assistance of another boat closeby. The Coastal Security Force personnel rushed to the aid of the troubled boat and rescued the driver as well as the boat. Later the boat was towed to the commercial port at Karwar and emergency treatment was given to the injured driver Anthon D’Costa through 108 Ambulance.
It is gathered that the boat belongs to Loknath Kotian from Malpe near Udupi. Anthon D’Costa hails from Alvekody in Bhatkal.
