Udupi: Thieves decamped with gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 2 lakhs from the Veeranjaneya Shrine in Yelluru here on Thursday, June 7.

The Veeranjaneya Shrine is a part of Sri Veereshwara Temple, Yelluru and is dedicated to the deity Anjaneya. The theft came to light when the temple priest Sathyanarayana Acharya opened the temple for usual prayers. He immediately informed the temple management about the theft.

The temple manager Raghvendra Rao lodged a complaint with the police about the robbery. As per the complaint, the robbers made away with silver ornaments and silver shield of the temple deity, two silver plates, two silver tins, silver foot lamp, a silver plate used for offerings and Aarti and a gold chain.

The news of the theft spread like wildfire and a large crowd including temple administrators, officials, temple staff, and devotees gathered at the temple. As someone in the crowd suspected that the valuables may have been thrown into the pond, some locals jumped into it and searched in vain.

Kaup Police Circle inspector V S Halamurthy Rao visited the spot with the Padubidri police and forensic experts and carried out investigations.
