Udupi: A rape convict in POCSO case displayed total disregard for the judiciary by hurling a shoe at the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) after the Udupi Additional and Sessions Court pronounced a 20-year imprisonment and Rs 25,000 penalty on him on April 13.
The accused Prashanth Kulal (30), a resident of Keerthinagara, Arooru Village, Brahmavara was angered that the arguments presented by the SPP had led to his conviction in the rape case involving a minor. A miffed Prashant started abusing the SPP and hurled a shoe at him in the presence of the judge apart from threatening to kill him.
The SPP urged the court to treat the matter seriously terming the behaviour of the rape accused as an insult to the judiciary. Taking cognisance of the gravity of the issue, the judge directed the superintendent of police to take suitable action.
Case background:
In February 2013, the convict had taken a 15-year-old girl from Koteshwara to his relatives’ place and sexually assaulted her. Prashanth also happens to be an accused in acmurder case in Brahmavara Police Station limits.
