Udupi: Members of the All India Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) Union staged indefinite protest at Head Post office on Tuesday March 10.
Basava Billava, president of Udupi division said that Dak Sevaks have an important role in the rural service. Gramin Dak Sevaks is one of the oldest postal service, while it is known for the payment of minimum wages, they have not provided the facilities like pension, Medical allowance and other facilities
It is considered as one of the profit making departments in this sector he added. Gramin Dak Sevaks make Rs 76,000 crores with Rural Postal Life Insurance Policies.
He demanded that GDS employees should be considered for central pay commission benefits, GDS employees should be regularized and they be provided with 8 hours’ work. Service conditions should be regulated by available rules and regulations on par with central government employees.
He said the central government should withdraw its decision to privatize the postal department.
During the period from April 2013 to February 2014, 63 Crores 90 Lakh MGNREGA accounts were opened and an amount of ten thousand four hundred crores was disbursed.
