Mangaluru: The Shiradi Ghat road is expected to soon be opened for buses to commence regular operations, said Minister for Urban Development and Housing and district in-charge minister U T Khader on Thursday, September 27.

A meeting with the with highway officials was called by the minister at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where he instructed the officials to permit buses to start their operations through the Shiradi Ghats by the month’s end. The ghats were closed recently due to landslides that severely damaged the roads and made it unsafe for commuters. After the roads were repaired, permission was granted to light motor vehicles to ply on them.

UT Khader informed that he has already instructed the Hassan Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rohini Sidhuri to open the Shiradi Ghat roads at the earliest and to appoint additional police force to places that are dangerous for commuters. He that added that owners/drivers of goods vehicles will be instructed to use the Charmadi Ghats for some time, in order to avoid heavy traffic once buses and other vehicles are allowed to pass through the Shiradi Ghats.

He also discussed the bad condition of the Kulur Bridge and directed the highway officials to start construction work of the new bridge soon.

DC Sasikanth Senthil said during the meeting that they are yet to receive information regarding the opening of the Shiradi Ghat road for buses from the Hassan district administration.

The Shiradi was opened in July for commuters, after having been closed for around nine months for the renovation of the roads. Heavy rains in the month of August caused several landslides in various places along the Shiradi Ghat roads which damaged the new roads, forcing authorities to close the ghats once again. The roads were only recently reopened for commuters.
