Udupi: Three months after boat services to the serene St. Mary’s Island was prohibited by the district administration due to monsoon, the restrictions were lifted and services were resumed on Sunday, September 16.

The islands, one of the 26 Geological Monuments of India, are situated 6.5 kms off the coast of Malpe beach in Udupi district. It was also recently given a make-over in order to boost tourism in the area.

There are as many as seven boats that ferry people to and from the islands, three of which depart from the Tegma jetty and four from the tourist jetty near the Malpe Sea Walkway, said Malpe Beach Executive Officer Sudesh Shetty adding that the islands would be as good as new in the next week or so, now that the weeds have been cleared and toilets cleaned.

Reportedly, the district administration is also planning to construct a floating jetty at the island, which is expected to help tourists alight and board the boats ferrying them to the island.
