Udupi: Two youth from Dommasandra in Bengaluru have been arrested by the Kaup police for demanding hafta (protection money) via making telephonic calls to Stanley, an entrepreneur from Shirva near Kaup, and Vincent D’Souza from Manipura in the district.
The arrested have been identified as Rohit (23) and Shivaraj (23). They are stated to be working for a person who is serving a jail term at present. Under the orders of their jailed master, they used to call people and put forth demand for payment of hafta. They normally used internet or telephone booths to make these calls, and often made reference to underworld fugitive, Ravi Poojary, during their conversations, it is learnt.
On the basis of the information gathered from the arrested, the policemen have laid out a trap to nab the other accused. It is said that these two had called several leading businessmen from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, demanding payment of money.
The arrests were made by a team led by Kaup police sub-inspector, Jagadish Shetty, under the supervision of Kaup police circle inspector, Sunil Y Naik, and directions of deputy superintendent of police, Vinay Nayak, additional district superintendent of police, Dr Santosh Kumar, and superintendent of police, K Annamalai.
