Karkala: With River Swarna drying up, Karkala and Udupi are going to face water scarcity soon.
Presently, water which gets stored in dam in Mundli in Karkala, is released to a water purifying unit in Ramasamudra and later it is supplied to Karkala municipal council limits.
Same Swarna river water flows to a dam constructed near Baje in Hiriyadka and the water is supplied to Udupi city corparation.
Due to less rainfall last year and no rain in the month of March and April this year, the water level in Swarna river has come down. Everyday 2MLD water was being supplied to Karkala town municipal council. But the available water is sufficient only for 20 days, as per the Municipal council authorities.
In municipal council limits, there are more than 15 public wells. Currently out of 15, water is used only from two wells. But due to unscientific drainage system, the polluted water flows to these public wells and private wells.
Two new wells can be dug in Anekere. Meanwhile, a new well is being dug in Jarigudde. The state government has granted Rs 20 lacs from natural disaster fund for the same.
