Udupi: POCSO case, accused sentenced to 20 years in jail

The Special CBI Court in Jammu on Tuesday sentenced a former Executive Engineer of Northern Railways to five years' imprisonment in a bribery case

Udupi: The Udupi District Additional and POCSO Fast Track Special Court has sentenced an accused in the POCSO case to 20 years in jail for sexually assaulting a minor girl two years ago.

The accused has been identified as Sahil (23). The girl, a resident of Byndoor Police Station limits, lived in Sagar and the accused worked near the girl’s father’s hotel where he was staying. The accused contacted the girl and said that he was in love with her. In July 2021, when the girl came to her village, he came to Byndoor from Sagar on her birthday and took her at night and had physical relations with her on the pretext of marrying her. Similarly, the accused had physically assaulted the girl several times.

A case was registered at Byndoor Police Station on the basis of a complaint lodged by the girl’s mother. The then police inspector Santosh A. Kaikini had filed a chargesheet against the accused. Considering the circumstantial evidence, Judge Srinivas Suvarna convicted the accused and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment of 20 years and imposed a fine of Rs. 22,500.
