Udupi sand mining case: NGT adjourns hearing to November 9

Udupi: The case of sand extraction in Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) areas of Udupi district has been adjourned to November 9 by the National Green Tribunal (Southern Zone), Chennai.

The counsel for the Union Ministry for Environment and Forests sought two days time to present its side before the Tribunal. As the case is adjourned till November 9, the stay order on sand extraction in CRZ areas of Udupi district will continue till then, said Ranjan Shetty, advocate for the applicants, Udaya Suvarna and others from Baikady and Kukkude villages in Udupi district.

Foyr months ago, Udaya Suvarna and few other residents of Baikady and Kukkude villages near Brahmavar in Udupi taluk had approached the NGT, stating that sand was being extracted flouting all norms and environmental laws in the last few years.

Sand mining was stopped after the NGT had issued an order on May 17, 2016 staying the issuance of sand mining permit from the rivers of Udupi district.
