Udupi: The private aided school at Sankalakariya in Moodkur Gram Panchayat of Karkala Taluk, which was closed in 2017 due to lack of students, has been re-opened.
This time not for academic activities but for Assembly poll. The school, which was locked in 2017 due to shortage of students and the retirement of teachers. Now for the General Assembly elections to be held on May 10, is being opened. The school was also opened for the 2018 Assembly elections and the Gram Panchayat and Zilla Panchayat elections that followed.
Started in the pre-independence era, the school has a history dating back to a century and was run by Mundkur Doddamane Venkanna Shettar. As the number of students decreased, the Government stopped giving teachers to the aided schools, and after the retirement of the last teacher who served in this school, single teacher, Headmaster Babu Shettar, the building was locked by the department, which had no children and no teachers.
There are many people who have studied up to Class VII in this school and then pursued higher studies and are in a higher employment in the country and abroad. They also work as doctors, engineers and scientists in the US and London. There are teachers, businessmen, theatre actors, film actors too. There are farmers and politicians. The school, which has written a high future for thousands of people, is now being opened only for elections.
