Udupi: The activists of a Hindu organisation have attacked and created turmoil during a prayer held at Karkala, which is condemnable said Christian leader Veronica Cornelio.

She opined that instead of attacking those who went to prayer, they had to work on understanding their problems.

“Attacking someone is a violation of human rights. The right to pray is open to all. Instead of creating turmoil, Hindu activists could have gone individually and have tried to change their mindsets. It is not a great culture to go there and spread violence. It seems to be a kind of politically motivated attack. There is a need for the officials in charge of the district and the Police to take necessary actions in this regard,” she opined.

“Even though many of the Christian communities have already built Hindu temples, our community has never opposed it because it is their personal desire. It should not be forgotten that the Constitution of the country allows everyone the right to practice the religion of their own choice,” she told.

“Police officers have to take stern action on those responsible for such an incident. MLAs and Ministers must work to avoid such communal clashes in the Udupi district in future.

She suggested the Hindu Jagarana Vedike of the district pay attention to the issues like poverty, unemployment and rising prices of essential commodities and protest against them in the press release.
