The Congress party has expelled 20th Ward member K. Mahesh Kumar for violating the party’s whip during the Hospet Municipal Council elections held on September 12. Kumar’s absence from the polls, despite the party’s directive to vote, was deemed anti-party activity and a violation of the Prohibition of Defection Act.
According to District unit president Siraj Sheikh, Kumar’s actions caused severe embarrassment to the party. A complaint has been filed with the District Collector seeking the cancellation of Kumar’s membership in the Municipal Council.
A party leader, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed concerns about the lack of discipline within the Congress party. “The same situation has continued for 15 years, and it’s like a last-ditch effort to bring discipline. Party and ideology are disappearing in front of money,” they said.
Kumar, however, defended his actions, stating that he was unwell and hospitalised on the day before the polls and couldn’t vote. He denied betraying the party and claimed that no one from the party contacted him to inquire about his absence. Kumar plans to remain in the party and continue serving the people.
