Mangaluru: Students from educational institutions across Dakshina Kannada have once again delivered an impressive performance in the NEET UG 2026 re-test, the results of which were announced by the National Testing Agency (NTA). While the region recorded a slight decline in the number of top-ranked candidates compared to the previous year, it achieved a new milestone with a substantial increase in the number of students scoring above 600 marks.

The NEET UG re-test was conducted following the cancellation of the earlier examination due to a question paper leak controversy. Across the country, more than 11.20 lakh candidates have qualified in the examination.

Strong participation from Dakshina Kannada

A total of 5,570 students from Dakshina Kannada registered for the examination this year, while 4,343 candidates appeared for the test. The district has consistently been one of Karnataka’s strongest performers in national-level entrance examinations, and this year’s results have once again reinforced its reputation for academic excellence.

Educational institutions in the district reported encouraging outcomes, particularly in the number of students securing scores above the 600-mark threshold, which is often considered crucial for admission to top medical colleges.

Record number of students score above 600

Education experts noted that the district witnessed a significant increase in the number of candidates scoring more than 600 marks compared to last year. The performance is being viewed as a major achievement despite the challenges associated with the re-test process.

The increase in high scorers is expected to improve the prospects of students seeking admission to MBBS courses in government and private medical colleges across the country.

However, experts observed that although more students achieved higher scores, the number of candidates securing top national ranks was lower than in the previous year.

Karnataka remains a preferred destination for medical education

Karnataka continues to hold the distinction of having the highest number of MBBS seats in India. For the 2026-27 academic year, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase in MBBS seats nationwide, with Karnataka receiving a substantial share of the additional intake.

The expansion is expected to provide greater opportunities for aspiring medical students from the state, particularly those who have performed well in NEET UG 2026.

With more seats becoming available, students securing competitive scores are likely to benefit from improved admission prospects in both government and private medical institutions.

Experts explain dip in top rankings

According to education experts, several factors may have contributed to the decline in top national rankings despite the overall improvement in scores.

One major factor was the scheduling of the NEET re-test after the question paper leak in the original examination. Many coaching centres and educational institutions reportedly found it difficult to maintain the same level of focused preparation during the re-test period.

Experts pointed out that the commencement of PUC classes coincided with the preparation period for the re-test, creating additional challenges for institutions attempting to provide dedicated coaching to NEET aspirants.

Another factor cited was the mental fatigue experienced by students. After preparing extensively for the original examination, many candidates were reportedly reluctant to undergo another intense round of preparation for the re-test.

Positive outlook for medical aspirants

Despite the slight decline in top rankings, educationists believe the overall performance of Dakshina Kannada students remains highly commendable. The rise in the number of students scoring above 600 marks indicates strong academic preparation and continued excellence in competitive examinations.

With Karnataka offering the highest number of MBBS seats in the country and additional seats expected this academic year, many successful candidates from the district are likely to secure admission to medical colleges. The results reaffirm Dakshina Kannada’s status as one of Karnataka’s leading educational hubs and highlight the resilience of students who adapted to the challenges posed by the re-test.
