Davanagere: CCB Arrests Three Policemen, Including Suspended Constable
In a startling case of betrayal and fraud, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) arrested three policemen — including a suspended constable from Davanagere — for allegedly cheating a city-based pharmacist of ₹4 lakh under the pretext of helping him recover money lost in a fake gold coin deal.
The victim, Tabrez J., a medical shop owner in Devanahalli, was duped after being approached in March by a man named Ramesh, who offered him four kilograms of gold coins at a discounted rate through a contact in Harihara, Davanagere. Trusting the offer after a personal inspection of the coins, Tabrez bought two kilos for ₹12 lakh, only to later discover the coins were counterfeit.
While trying to track down Ramesh, Tabrez was contacted by two individuals — Mahboob and Yuvaraj — claiming to be RT Nagar policemen. They assured him they could recover the lost amount. Persuaded by their confidence, Tabrez accompanied them to Davanagere, where they introduced him to Maruthi, a suspended constable with a tainted record.
Maruthi promised to retrieve ₹8 lakh and did hand over that amount on April 29 — but the group retained a large chunk, returning only ₹4.5 lakh to Tabrez. Suspicious and advised by friends, Tabrez reported the incident to the Police Commissioner, leading to the CCB investigation and arrests.
Officials are probing whether the original gold scam was orchestrated by the same accused. A departmental inquiry is also underway against Maruthi.
