Davanagere Special-Needs Orphan to Be Adopted by Italian Couple in Milestone Move
In a heartwarming development, Tarun, a 3-year-old special-needs child from Amulya Orphanage, Davanagere, is set to be adopted by a couple from Italy, marking the facility’s tenth international adoption.
Born to a 19-year-old unwed mother who surrendered him due to personal constraints, Tarun—who has walking disabilities—will officially join his new family on May 13, with the transfer facilitated by Deputy Commissioner G. M. Gangadharswamy.
According to T. N. Kavitha, District Child Protection Officer, Amulya Kendra is a government-recognised specialised adoption agency that works in accordance with Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) guidelines. Children are referred to the agency by the District Child Welfare Committee as part of legally free for adoption (LFA) procedures.
The Italian couple was selected after meeting all required criteria, including assessments of mental and physical health, financial stability, and social status. Indian law does not allow direct adoptions; instead, CARA conducts a structured and monitored process, usually lasting around six months.
Post-adoption, CARA also ensures two years of quarterly welfare monitoring to track the child’s adjustment and development.
Since its establishment 13 years ago, the Davanagere adoption centre has processed 212 cases, reuniting 54 children with biological families. Sadly, 25 children succumbed to health issues. Many of the orphans arrive through the ‘Cradle of Love’ initiative at Chigateri District Hospital.
