Davangere city is facing significant challenges due to a surge in stray pig populations. In response, the Davangere City Corporation constructed a pig shed to address the issue. However, this move has sparked strong opposition from local villagers who are against the commencement of operations at this center.
The corporation planned to relocate the pigs to the Varaha School, constructed on the outskirts of Hosahalli village under Goodal Gram’s jurisdiction. This facility, initiated by former Mayor ST Viresh, spans 7 acres near Hebbala in Davangere Taluk and was built to tackle pig rearing and slaughtering issues within city limits. Despite its readiness, the center remains unused due to ongoing legal battles and strong opposition from local residents.
Local villagers have taken legal action to prevent pigs from being relocated to Varaha School, citing concerns over potential disease outbreaks and significant health risks for residents across seven villages. As a result, court proceedings have led to an injunction against moving pigs to the newly built center, complicating the corporation’s efforts.
The plans for Varaha School include a 13-foot high perimeter fence, essential amenities such as a water supply system, and access roads tailored for pig breeders, ensuring proper waste management and animal care. Commissioner Renuka acknowledged the legal challenges and strong community objections, emphasizing that further decisions must await the resolution of court proceedings.
Despite the completion of Varaha School, the relocation of pigs remains on hold, reflecting the ongoing conflicts and resistance from the local community.
