The beloved Davangere Benne Dose, known for its crispy texture and generous butter spread, has been a culinary staple across Karnataka for years. However, efforts to secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for this popular dosa have encountered a roadblock. The Union government has denied the GI tag application, arguing that the dosa’s widespread availability across Karnataka dilutes its regional uniqueness.

Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Jitin Prasada, in a written response to Davangere MP Dr. Prabha Mallikarjun, stated that the dosa does not meet the GI criteria because it is produced and sold in multiple districts, not just Davangere. This widespread production, he explained, undermines the item’s distinctiveness required for GI status.

Dr. Prabha Mallikarjun, however, remains determined to secure the GI tag for Davangere Benne Dose. She has instructed the Davangere deputy commissioner to file an application with the Geographical Indications Registry despite the initial setback. “There are GI tags for products like Rosogulla and Lonavala Chikki, which are widely distributed,” Prabha pointed out. “The popularity of Davangere Benne Dose should not disqualify it from receiving this recognition.”

The Benne Dose’s history dates back to 1928 when four brothers from Beedki village in Belagavi district moved to Davangere. They learned the art of dosa-making from their mother, Chennamma, who used to make Ragi Dosa. Initially sold for just six paise, the dosa now commands prices between Rs 55 to Rs 65, reflecting its enduring popularity and cultural significance.
