In Davanagere district, Karnataka, concerted efforts have successfully thwarted numerous instances of child marriages in recent months. Authorities attribute this achievement to proactive measures aimed at addressing the root causes such as poverty, superstition, tradition, and lack of awareness.

To combat this practice, district-level committees comprising ASHA workers, Anganwadi teachers, PDOs, and supervisors have been established. These committees play a pivotal role in raising awareness and intervening to prevent child marriages. Notably, children themselves have been instrumental in reporting cases through a dedicated toll-free number.

In the months of April and May 2024 alone, 25 out of 26 reported cases of child marriage were prevented in Davanagere. Throughout the preceding year of 2023, a total of 194 such cases were averted, underscoring the ongoing efforts and effectiveness of these preventive measures. In instances where child marriages are detected, immediate action is taken, including the filing of FIRs against those responsible.

The legal ramifications are severe, with perpetrators facing up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2 lakh. Beyond legal action, extensive educational campaigns are conducted in schools, gram panchayat meetings, villages, and colleges to educate children and communities about the detrimental effects of child marriage.

This comprehensive approach highlights the commitment of local authorities and stakeholders to safeguarding children’s rights and promoting a supportive environment for their holistic development. Through sustained vigilance and community engagement, Davanagere continues to make strides in eliminating the harmful practice of child marriage.
