Dharwad: The Central Jail in Dharwad is undergoing a major security upgrade with the construction of four observation towers. The project is currently 75% complete and aims to bolster surveillance around the prison compound.

The new towers, standing at 30 feet, are strategically placed in each direction to enhance monitoring capabilities. The installation includes 55 CCTV cameras inside the prison and 10 additional cameras in the outer zone, aiming to improve the detection of contraband and monitor movements effectively.

Prison Superintendent P. Mahadevanayaka informed Prajavani that the contractor has pledged to finish the construction within four months. He emphasised that the towers will assist in detecting any objects thrown into the prison area and enhance overall surveillance.

The towers are part of a broader initiative reflecting the successful implementation of similar systems at Bangalore Jail. The enhanced security measures will include armed personnel stationed around the clock and binoculars for improved observation.

The Central Jail covers 59 acres, with 19 acres allocated to the building itself, which accommodates 12 dormitories and 18 cells. Among the inmates is Dhanraj alias Raju, a suspect in the high-profile Chitradurga Renuka Swamy murder case, who shares a cell with three others.

Additionally, a proposal is underway to construct a three-foot blade fencing around the compound wall, based on recommendations from the police department. This is aimed at preventing unauthorized access and ensuring the facility’s security.

These measures mark a significant step in enhancing safety and order within the Dharwad Central Jail, reflecting a growing commitment to secure correctional environments.
