Dharwad district secured the third spot nationally in organ donation pledges, following Ballari, which leads with 4,816 pledges, and Bengaluru Urban. Dharwad recorded 3,435 pledges between September 2023 and November 26, 2024.
The initiative, spearheaded by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has seen Karnataka achieve the highest pledges in India. The District Surveillance Unit (DSU) actively promotes awareness through health melas and community events.
District health officer Dr. Parashuram highlighted that a single donor can save up to eight lives by donating organs like the liver, heart, kidneys, and eyes. Awareness campaigns, QR code registrations, and community outreach have significantly boosted participation.
