Government schools in Dharwad district are grappling with rising egg prices, hampering the implementation of the midday meal scheme. The government has fixed the cost at ₹6 per egg, covering transportation and peeling, but the current market price has surged to ₹6.50, creating financial strain for schools.

Under the nutrition initiative supported by the school education department and the Azim Premji Foundation, eggs are provided twice weekly by the government and four times by the foundation. However, rural schools face additional challenges, such as transportation issues, further straining resources.

The Karnataka Rajya Prathamika Shala Shikshakara Sangha has urged the government to revise the allocation to at least ₹7 per egg. District secretary Rajashekar Honappannavar highlighted that the cost has remained unchanged for three years despite rising prices, causing maintenance difficulties for schools.

Honappannavar also suggested engaging NGOs to distribute boiled eggs, with the government providing materials for preparation. While the proposal awaits approval, the lack of clarity has compounded the issue for schools already stretched thin.

The association has appealed to the education minister and chief minister for immediate intervention, emphasizing the need for adjustments to sustain the nutritional program.
