Dharwad: Tragic Road Accident Claims Three Lives, Sparks Protests
Dharwad was shaken on Sunday morning by the tragic news of a road accident that resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a six-year-old boy. The incident occurred around 4:40 AM when a family from Sampigenagar was traveling in an autorickshaw to catch a train. The vehicle was struck head-on by an overspeeding truck that swerved to avoid stray cattle blocking the road.
The impact was devastating; the autorickshaw driver, 35-year-old Ramesh Hanchimani, and his 55-year-old relative, Marevva Hanchimani, died instantly. Six-year-old Pranav succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Two other family members, Marevva’s daughter-in-law Renuka Hanchaimani, 25, and her four-year-old grandson Pruthvi, are currently battling severe injuries at KIMS Hospital in Hubballi.
The truck driver has been taken into custody, and a case has been filed by the traffic police.
In the aftermath of the accident, local residents protested by blocking the Dharwad-Alnavar Road for over four hours, demanding action regarding the stray cattle issue. MLA Arvind Bellad had to intervene, assuring the protesters of immediate corrective measures.
Residents have voiced frustration over the negligence of the police and the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) regarding stray cattle on busy roads. Complaints have been made about cattle blocking roads, particularly near the railway station, causing traffic disruptions, yet little action has been taken.
“This is not the first time such an incident has occurred, and yet the authorities remain indifferent,” lamented resident Dayanand Patil.
