Dharwad, with its rich two-century-old connection to the Christian community, is a city where faith and education intertwine. Early Christian missionaries, who established Dharwad as a center for religious outreach and education, played a pivotal role in earning the city its title as an “educational hub.”
As Christmas approaches, Dharwad’s three major churches—Hebich Memorial Church (1845), All Saints’ Anglican Church (1888), and Holy Cross Church—are adorned with festive decorations and bustling with celebrations. Over 7,000 Christians call Dharwad home, with approximately 70% being Protestants and the remainder Catholics.
What sets Christmas in Dharwad apart is the unique blend of local traditions and Goan influences. Similar to the Hindu Deepavali festivities, Christians light sky lanterns, burst crackers, and prepare festive delicacies like chakkuli, avalakki, karjikai, and ladoo, reflecting the city’s cultural harmony.
The Hebich Memorial Church, located on Railway Station Road, stands as the oldest in the city with a legacy dating back to 1845. All Saints’ Church, renowned for its elegant brickwork and traditional architecture, adds historical charm to the celebrations. Holy Cross Church, situated at Saint Joseph’s School, is another key venue for Christmas festivities.
The Basel Mission compound, home to numerous Christian families, is illuminated with vibrant lights, balloons, stars, and glittering decorations, creating a magical holiday ambiance. Special programs for children and lively community activities ensure that Christmas in Dharwad remains a cherished experience for all.
