Hubballi ASI Dies from Injuries After Iron Rod Accident
In a tragic incident, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Nabhiraj Dayannavar of Hubballi suburban police station passed away on Sunday after succumbing to severe injuries he sustained from an iron rod that fell on him from a flyover under construction. Dayannavar, aged 59, had been undergoing treatment at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KMCRI), where he battled critical brain injuries for nearly a week. His death has sparked demands for accountability from the construction company responsible for the flyover.
The Incident
Dayannavar, a resident of Rajajinagar in Sattur, near Dharwad, was en route to work on his two-wheeler when the accident occurred on September 10. The iron rod, which fell from the flyover under construction near Court Circle, pierced through his helmet, severely injuring his brain. A special medical team of five neurosurgeons had been monitoring his health around the clock, but despite their efforts, he passed away in the early hours of Sunday.
The flyover in question was being constructed by Jandu Construction India Private Limited, a firm awarded the tender for the project. In response to the incident, the district administration has temporarily suspended all work on the flyover. The investigation is ongoing, and the police have already registered a case against 19 individuals, including three directors of the construction company.
Family’s Demand for Justice
Dayannavar’s family has expressed their profound grief and anger, demanding that the construction firm be blacklisted and held accountable for the tragic accident. They have urged the authorities to take strict action against both the contractor and any officials responsible for ensuring the safety of construction sites.
“We want those responsible for this to be punished,” said Shantaraj Mallasamudra, Dayannavar’s brother-in-law. “The company failed to take proper precautionary measures, and this has cost my brother-in-law his life.”
Response from Authorities
Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar addressed the gravity of the situation and assured the family that action would be taken against those responsible. The commissioner revealed that notices had already been served to the contractor for failing to implement necessary safety precautions at the construction site.
Additionally, both offices of the construction company have remained closed since the incident, adding further pressure on the company to cooperate with the investigation. The commissioner stated, “We will ensure that all individuals involved in this tragic event face justice. Negligence in such matters cannot be tolerated.”
Case Registered Against 19 Individuals
Following the accident, a case was registered at the Hubballi Suburban Police Station, where Dayannavar worked. The case includes charges against 19 people, among them three directors of Jandu Construction India Private Limited. The charges revolve around negligence, failure to enforce safety measures, and endangering lives during the construction of the flyover.
An Honoured Officer
Nabhiraj Dayannavar was a well-respected figure in the police department, having dedicated his career to serving the community. His colleagues described him as a diligent and responsible officer who was known for his commitment to duty. Dayannavar’s tragic death has left a void in the department, and his loss is deeply mourned.
A Noble Gesture: Eyes Donated
Despite the tragedy, Dayannavar’s family honoured his wishes by donating his eyes after his death. His brother-in-law, Shantaraj Mallasamudra, revealed that Dayannavar had also expressed a desire to donate all his organs. Unfortunately, due to the critical nature of his injuries, his organs could not be used for transplantation as they had become inactive.
“He always wanted to help others, even after his death. We fulfilled his wish by donating his eyes,” Mallasamudra shared.
Flyover Construction Suspended
In light of the accident, the district administration has ordered the temporary suspension of the flyover construction near Court Circle. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine whether safety protocols were breached during the project.
The tragic incident has raised concerns about construction safety standards in Hubballi and other areas. The suspension of work on the flyover is seen as a necessary step to prevent any further mishaps. As investigations continue, the district administration has vowed to ensure that similar accidents are avoided in future projects.
