DHARWAD: In a significant operation, police have arrested Abhishek Jeetusingh Deval for the illegal transportation of approximately 2.5 kg of gold and silver jewelry valued at ₹73.35 lakh. The arrest occurred near SDM College in Dharwad.
Acting on credible information, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) and Vidyagiri police collaborated to intercept Abhishek, who was travelling from Mumbai to Hubballi on a private bus. The suspect, residing in Chaval Jolada Oni in Hubballi, works as a courier employee.
The authorities seized 1.1 kg of gold ornaments and 1 kg 463 grams of silver jewelry from him. Police reports indicate that Abhishek was illegally transporting these items from Mumbai to Hubballi for delivery to jewelry shops, all without proper GST documentation or legitimate bills.
Investigations have unveiled that this operation is part of a broader scheme aimed at evading taxes and circumventing legal protocols associated with the trade of precious metals. Consequently, a case has been filed at the Vidyagiri police station.
The successful operation was spearheaded by CCB ACP S.T. Odeyar, CCB Inspector Prabhu Gangenahalli, and Vidyagiri Police Station Inspector Sangamesh Didiganal.
This incident underscores the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in combating the illegal transportation and trade of precious metals. It highlights the urgent need for enhanced monitoring and regulation within the jewelry industry to prevent such unlawful activities in the future.
