Six Youths Arrested for Extortion and Cyberbullying in Dharwad
DHARWAD: The Dharwad Suburban police have arrested six youths involved in a disturbing extortion scheme. These individuals were allegedly morphing photographs, adding vulgar audio, and posting them on social media troll pages. They then demanded between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000 from their victims to remove the offending content.
Among the arrested are four youths preparing for competitive exams in Dharwad and two final-year BA students from a prestigious city college. They managed 2-3 troll pages and used these platforms to extort money from victims.
In a notable case, the accused targeted a group of college students, editing and posting a vulgar image on Instagram. When the students requested its removal, the perpetrators demanded a ransom. One student filed a complaint with the Dharwad Suburban police, leading to the arrests.
Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N Shashikumar stated, “The case was registered on Monday. The miscreants would provide a phone number and demand Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 to take down the photos.”
The police are seeking custody of the arrested youths for further investigation and are open to registering additional complaints if more victims come forward.
